How to upgrade weapons in Project Triangle Strategy – The Smithy system explained

Posted by Lynna Burgamy on Monday, April 24, 2023

Unlike most turn-based RPGs, Project Triangle Strategy doesn't have any magical weapons hidden away in chests or dungeons, just waiting for you to find them. Instead, your character units will initially only have access to one weapon, which can then be upgraded into stronger versions. To do this, you'll have to learn how to unlock and use a special type of merchant—The Smithy.

The Smithy

Visiting The Smithy

The Smithy's services become available during the events of Chapter Two, at which point he can be found residing in your encampment. He'll offer to put his blacksmith skills to work, allowing you to upgrade weapons and unlock powerful weapon abilities. He doesn't work for free, however, meaning you'll need to supply him with the required Coin and materials for each upgrade.

The materials you'll need to unlock the Rank One abilities for your weapons can be bought from the Encampment Merchant, though he has a limited stock of materials available. You'll have to find the rest by collecting spoils from battle, or by completing the mock battles that can be found at the Encampment Tavern. Once you've gathered enough materials, the next step is deciding which abilities to spend them on.

Weapon Ranks and Abilities

Weapon Upgrades are divided into three Ranks, with your character unit's weapons starting out at Rank One. The Smithy is able to upgrade each weapon one Rank at a time with the proper materials, increasing your damage output and giving your character unit access to new abilities that can be unlocked. The required Coin and materials for each starting character unit's weapon upgrades are as follows:

  • Serenoa
    • Rank Two - One Silver, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Silver Sword, one Azure Crystal, 1000 Coin
  • Benedict
    • Rank Two - One Oak, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Fox Cane, one Obsidian, 1000 Coin
  • Frederica
    • Rank Two - One Leather, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Tome of Flames, one Parchment, 1000 Coin
  • Geela
    • Rank Two - One Crystal, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Ice Rod, one Meteorite Fragment, 1000 Coin
  • Roland
    • Rank Two - One Silver, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Silver Lance, one Azure Crystal, 1000 Coin
  • Anna
    • Rank Two - One Silver, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Silver Dagger, one Rare Thorn, 1000 Coin
  • Erador
    • Rank Two - One Indestructible Stone, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Guardian Shield, one Lion's Heart, 1000 Coins
  • Hughette
    • Rank Two - One Spider Silk, 1000 Coin
    • Rank Three - One Greatbow, one Curious Feather, 1000 Coin

Similar to upgrading your character unit's weapon Rank, you'll have to use a mix of materials and Coin to acquire weapon Abilities. Each Rank includes an assortment of skills, with more becoming accessible as a weapon's Rank increases. Weapon Abilities within the same rank can be unlocked in any order, but the later a skill is learned, the more materials it will require.

When weapon Abilities are connected by an arrow icon, they must be unlocked in the order indicated by the arrow. For example, in order to access Serenoa's Weapon Damage Up II passive skill, you must first have unlocked Weapon Damage Up I. Now that you've been armed with the knowledge necessary to use The Smithy system, all that's left for you to do is get out there and start crafting some weapons!
